What Is An Ideal Fundraising Product? Try Personalized Cookbooks. by Andy Barber
There are dozens of fundraising options for your community or organization. Whether it is for a school band, a charity, or a civic group, fundraising is an integral part of keeping your group’s head above water financially. It’s a fact. You have lots of choices, but not all of them are ideal.
Do You Dread Fundraising?
How many of you have children who come home from school with a pamphlet and marching orders to go sell popcorn for candy for the school? I don’t know about you, but I can only eat so much of those over-priced snacks. Then you must hit up all your neighbors and friends who begrudgingly fork over the cash. Actually, that kind of fundraiser is more extortion than anything else. No one wants to be the neighbor who is known as the guy who said, “No thanks, kid. I’m not interested.” So you hand over the money just to maintain your reputation.
Then you have the discount books…those things with all the “get one round of golf free” at the local mini-golf complex or a free drink when you buy a large pizza at the pizza place. Whoopee. What a deal. My wife is a sucker for those things. I suppose they are OK if you really work at finding good deals within its pages, but I don’t think driving clear across town to get a dollar discount on having my shirts cleaned is that big of a savings.
Magazine sales. Let’s face it, much like the popcorn sales…people subscribe to magazines they will probably never read just so they can help you raise money for a good cause.
Therein lies the key to a successful fundraiser. Why rely on peoples’ generosity alone, when you can tap into their giving spirit AND offer them a product that they can really use? People are naturally generous, but if they realize that they are getting a valuable item or service for their donation they will gladly buy from you. Folks will open their wallets much quicker and wider if you have something they truly want.
And The Answer Is:
A family style cookbook. Think about it. A personalized cookbook filled with recipes from the best local cooks in your organization or community is going to be a hit with anyone that eats…which is most of us. Each town or community has a number of people who harbor “secret” recipes, which cooks talk about in hushed tones in kitchens all over town. If you can convince those cooks to give them to you, you’ll have people calling you up and asking to buy one of your personalize cook books.
It Works, Too
One organization to which I belong created a Family Cookbook as described above, and we have had the publisher print more copies for sale in the last few years. It has been a consistent and long-term money-raising endeavor for us. We are quite pleased.
The process isn’t difficult, either. A good fundraising cookbook publisher will provide all the tools and advice you need to create a cookbook that looks professional, and will be popular with everyone around. A reputable publisher will have step-by-step directions and recommendations, as well as many design options and formats. Ideally you will find one with a guarantee, too. There are a few publishers that offer them, so choose one of them.
